Major OOPS! Turns out it was Fifth Harmony NOT Zayn that won Best Music Video at the iHeart Awards!
The iHeart Awards totally just pulled an Oscars style mix up.
What’s the deal with award shows handing out trophies to the wrong winners these days? On Sunday the iHeart Awards announced Zayn as winner for Best Music Video for his video “Pillowtalk”. The show even played this adorable acceptance speech with Gigi Hadid via satellite.
But it turns out, Zayn didn’t win the award after all. The “Pillowtalk” singer’s award was actually meant for Fifth Harmony for their hit “Work From Home” featuring Ty Dolla Sign.
iHeart’s official website lists 5H as the winner for the fan voted Best Music Video category. In addition iHeart’s official Twitter account tweeted, “Congrats #Harmonizers. You helped @fifthharmony win #BestFanArmy, #BestCover and #BestMusicVideo”. Instead of admitting the mistake, the award show apologized for the confusion in a series of tweets and started by saying, “Incorrect messaging was pushed out on saturday night during rehearsals”.
iHeart then confirmed Fifth Harmony DID in fact win the Best Music Video award, and in a third tweet declared that instead Zayn had won a previously unannounced award called Best Solo Breakout.
Zayn fans were NOT pleased with this mistake, and afterwards the hashtag #iHeartWasRigged began trending online. Zayn himself has not responded to the mixup as of yet.
What do you guys think really happened here? Do you think the show was looking for a viral moment? And do you think they tried to cover up the mistake by giving Zayn a different award?
